It is often recommended by the dentist and helps to keep teeth and gums healthy: Professional teeth cleaning from time to time makes perfect sense – but it can be expensive. However, health insurance companies give grants. An overview.
If you want to be treated by the dentist on a statutory insurance card, you only receive a check-up of your teeth, mouth, and jaw area twice a year and a tartar removal once a year.
However, professional teeth cleaning brings with it costs. Because it is actually not medically necessary and is therefore seen as a private service. The patients have to pay themselves. On average, £80 to £120 are due, and even more for complex meetings. The condition, as well as the number of teeth, are decisive here: the more that needs to be cleaned, the more expensive the session is usually.
Professional Teeth Cleaning: Some of the costs are covered
Statutory health insurance companies add certain amounts, however, as tooth cleaning has a positive effect on dental health. How much that is, however, varies.
Finanztest has found that more than half of the 74 health insurances tested allow their members to have their teeth cleaned easily at any dentist of their choice.
Usually an annual grant
Most health insurances give a subsidy once a year, some even twice. The amount added is usually between £35 and £60. Only the London Dentaly gives a three-digit amount of up to 500 GBP, spread over up to two tooth cleanings per year and for up to 80 percent of the bill.
However, the £500 – those who are insured from June receive £250 – is a total budget. This means that there may be other possible benefits such as travel vaccinations or osteopathic treatments. The more other things you can do with this budget, the less you have available for the cost of professional teeth cleaning. Only people who live or work in a nearby area can access the insurance.
Some health insurance companies determine which doctors can have your teeth cleaned. Then you either pay a fixed price or the costs are covered in full.
Pay attention to any conditions
However, the assumption of costs or subsidies is often associated with conditions. Technicians and Barmer, for example, also require insured persons to sign up for a bonus program. Often, preventive examinations and sporting activities, as well as vaccinations, have to be proven to receive subsidies for treatments such as teeth cleaning. A point system is then used for calculation.
If your health insurance company pays you a grant without a bonus program, you only have to submit the invoice after the treatment.
Change health insurance to clean your teeth?
Basically, most of the health insurance benefits are the same, there are mostly only differences in the extra offers. It is, therefore, worth comparing a little if you want to switch. You should include personal illnesses or preferences. Taking over osteopathic treatments or early diagnosis examinations for children can also be worthwhile.
If you have decided to change, you simply have to observe the changeover period of two months to the end of the month and send an informal letter to the old register. If you cancel at the end of March, you can start in June with the new cash register of your choice.
Professional teeth cleaning does not hurt and leaves your teeth in a nice clean condition. Dental problems such as tooth decay and bad breath have no chance – so it is worthwhile to endure the procedure from time to time. It is carried out by the dentist or specially trained dental staff.
This is how professional teeth cleaning works
Once you have clarified everything relevant to subsidizing your professional teeth cleaning and made an appointment, your doctor will proceed as follows:
- Your dentist or orthodontist will clean & in the practice will first take a close look at your teeth and gums. Plaque and discoloration are examined and gum problems are discovered. Dentures are usually not a problem.
- Now it’s time to clean: If there is tartar, it is removed with a kind of hooked instrument. Deposits and discolorations that are softer are removed with rubber attachments, small brushes, or powder-water jet devices. Dental floss or thin, sandpaper-like strips are used to fill the spaces between the teeth.
- Once all impurities have been removed, the teeth can be polished. Again, brushes are used for this, to which a paste mixed with fluoride is applied with abrasive grains. A fluoride-containing gel or a protective varnish protects and strengthens the tooth enamel afterward.
After cleaning, you can still ask your dentist for care tips: How are teeth properly brushed, what should you pay attention to with your teeth, what problem areas are there. Your dentist is also likely to recommend that you floss regularly.
You should plan around 45 to 60 minutes for the entire procedure. But here, too, the following applies again: the more you have to do, the longer it takes.
After the professional teeth cleaning, you can usually pay the costs by invoice. Then submit this to the health insurance company. But as we have already stated above: Each health insurance company follows its own procedure. The respective customer service will give you information on this.
