We share the answer to the most frequent questions that our patients ask us when attending an initial consultation.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is the orthodontic treatment that works based on transparent aligners. These aligners have the same function as braces as they use the most advanced 3D digital imaging technology and the most up-to-date software on the market. The Invisalign System allows you to digitize your teeth and obtain a prediction of how you will end up once the treatment is finished. Each aligner is manufactured in a 100% personalized way so that your teeth little by little generate the desired movement.
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign aligners move your teeth little by little (.25mm per aligner approximately), this series of movements are exactly previously programmed through the software used at the time of generating your treatment. Therefore, each pair of aligners is a stage that generates the treatment plan to obtain the final result.
How long does an Invisalign Treatment last?
The duration of the treatment depends on the complexity of the case of each patient and the time of use of each aligner. You can get more detailed information from your Invisalign Specialist.
What are the advantages of using Invisalign?
Invisalign offers a number of advantages over other orthodontic treatments. The main advantage is that the aligners are practically invisible and hardly anyone will notice that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Another advantage is that, as the aligners are removable, throughout your treatment you can eat and drink as much as you want simply by removing the aligners. Thanks to the fact that you can remove the aligners, hygiene is much easier and you can brush regularly.
Here are some examples that summarize the advantages of using Invisalign over braces:
What material are the aligners made of?
The aligners are made from a medical grade thermoplastic material developed exclusively for the Invisalign System. Each aligner uses SmartTrack® technology, which has been specifically designed to obtain better control of dental movements and a better fit of each aligner in patients, since it generates a smooth and constant outside with greater elasticity.
Can all orthodontists perform an Invisalign Treatment?
No, if indeed your Invisalign treatment must be performed by an Orthodontist, your specialist must be certified as an “Invisalign® Provider” or Invisalign® Specialist. Equally important to confirming that your doctor is a certified Invisalign specialist, you should also review his category, since a higher category equals a greater number of cases, and this translates into experience.
How often are Invisalign follow-up appointments?
Patients using Invisalign generally see a 4- to 8-week check-up to check that treatment is progressing as planned. At these appointments, the specialist checks if a procedure (such as IPR) needs to be performed and gives the patient the following sets of aligners. Each case is different, so the time between consultations will be defined by the specialist.
Once the Invisalign Treatment is finished, do I need to wear retainers?
Yes, it is important that regardless of the orthodontic treatment performed, the patient wears retainers at the end. The retention treatment keeps the teeth stable in their new position since it is at this stage that the teeth tend to return to their initial position. To keep your teeth in the ideal position, you should wear retainers as directed by your specialist. It may be that the last treatment aligner is the temporary retainer while the best retention option is determined.
Are there restrictions on eating while wearing Invisalign?
No, unlike other traditional orthodontic appliances, with the Invisalign system you can eat whatever you want, since the Invisalign aligners are removable, there are no food or drink restrictions as long as you remove them before eating any food. It also makes it easier for you to brush and floss after every meal.
How do I clean my aligners?
The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing and rinsing them in warm water, you can use special cleaning tablets. It is also important that you brush your teeth after each meal and before putting the aligners back on to keep them clean and continue your oral hygiene.
How long should I wear my aligners?
Invisalign aligners should be worn at all times during treatment except for eating, brushing your teeth, and flossing. The recommendation that your specialist will give you is that they should be on at least 22 hours a day to fulfil their proper function.
