What are the alternatives for sugar?

Children's Teeth

Sugar not only makes you happy but unfortunately also damages your health, especially dental health through tooth decay. If you still want to sweeten your life a bit, you usually use artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol, aspartame, maltitol, and saccharin, etc.

But be careful: too much of them can cause diarrhea, especially in children. Contrary to what was previously assumed, artificial sweeteners do not make you slim, but fat because they disrupt the glucose metabolism and the intestinal flora.

But there are alternatives to sugar – healthier and partly tooth-friendly sweeteners from Mother Nature that not everyone knows about:

  • Erythritol:

It is made by fermentation, but it is also found in fruits and cheese. It has about 70% sweetness compared to granulated sugar, no calories, and should not be cariogenic.

  • Stevia

It is 300 times sweeter than sugar, is made from the leaves of the subtropical stevia plant, and has no calories. Its purpose is to prevent plaque from building up.

  • Xylitol

Therefore, it occurs naturally in many plants and is a sugar alcohol that has 40% fewer calories than sugar. It should protect against tooth decay because it dissolves the plaque. Xylitol is often in use in tooth-friendly sweets.

  • Yacon syrup/powder

It is a root tuber from South America and one of the oldest crops in the Andes. It has half the calories of sugar and is high in minerals and antioxidants. In addition, Yacon should act like a prebiotic and ensure a healthy intestinal flora.

  • Coconut blossom sugar

It is made from the flowers of the coconut palm. It doesn’t taste like coconut, it tastes like caramel. Since it is not pure, it retains its nutrients. It’s not as sweet as sugar but has a similar amount of calories.

  • Luo Han Guo (Chinese stevia)

It consists of dried grapevine fruits and comes from southwest China. The almost calorie-free powder of monk fruit is approx. 300 times sweeter than sugar and full of antioxidants that are to protect against cancer, among other things.

It also has an anti-inflammatory effect, especially for stomach pain and respiratory infections. Last but not least, monk fruit also lowers blood sugar levels and delay the aging process.
